Shower Remodel with Travertine-Look Tile
This master bathroom shower in a Smyrna ranch home was a full demo-and-rebuild. The existing shower had original tile from the late 1990s showing grout failure along the floor-to-wall transition, a sign of waterproofing that had worn through. We removed all the existing tile and backer board, replaced the substrate with new cement board, and applied a full liquid waterproofing membrane before any new tile went up.
The wall tile is a large-format travertine-look porcelain, set in a horizontal stacked bond. Two built-in niche shelves were framed into the wall before boarding, then lined with the same tile and given a slight outward slope so water drains rather than pools. The shower floor uses small hexagon mosaic in a tone that complements the wall tile without matching it exactly. The hexagon format allows the floor to slope properly toward the drain without visible lippage.
What We Did
- Removed existing tile and damaged cement board throughout the shower.
- Installed new cement board and applied RedGard liquid waterproofing membrane.
- Framed and tiled built-in niche shelves with sloped shelf base.
- Set large-format wall tile using leveling clips; installed hexagon floor mosaic with proper drain slope.
