Gray Marble Bathroom Remodel
This compact hall bathroom in a Mableton home near Nickajack Road was a full gut-out remodel. The original tub-shower combo was removed in favor of a smaller footprint with a wall-hung toilet and floating vanity, creating more visual floor space. The gray marble-look porcelain tile runs continuously from floor to ceiling on the primary wall, which required a very precise plumb check and substrate prep given the tight room dimensions.
In a small bathroom, any deviation in the tile plane is immediately visible because there is nothing to draw the eye away from it. We took extra time on the substrate check and used a full-coat method (back-buttering each tile in addition to troweling the wall) to ensure 100% adhesive coverage. The large-format tile in a small room also means nearly every tile required at least one cut.
What We Did
- Full demo; replaced cement board and checked substrate for plumb and flat.
- Applied waterproofing to all wet areas; back-buttered each tile for full coverage.
- Set tile floor-to-ceiling with leveling clips; managed cuts around every fixture opening.
- Grouted, cleaned, and sealed all joints.
